A Fourth of July celebration in Brooklyn turned chaotic after gunfire erupted near a fireworks gathering in Coney Island, leaving eight people wounded, including four children.
The shooting happened late Saturday night near West 30th Street and Surf Avenue, close to the Seapark Apartments and not far from the Coney Island boardwalk. According to reports, shots rang out around 10:35 p.m., shortly after a scheduled fireworks display in the area.

Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene as wounded victims were found in the street. Video from the area reportedly showed officers carrying injured children to safety while ambulances responded. Witnesses described a frightening scene as families who had gathered for the holiday fireworks suddenly found themselves caught in gunfire.

The victims included four boys, ages 6, 7, 12, and 14, as well as two women and two men. One of the most seriously injured victims was a 21-year-old woman who was shot in the chest and listed in critical condition. A 6-year-old boy was reportedly shot in the stomach, while other child victims were struck in the legs. Most of the victims were listed in stable condition.
Authorities recovered a firearm at the scene, but no arrests had been announced at the time of the reports. Investigators were still working to determine how many shooters were involved and what led to the attack.

The shooting happened during one of the busiest nights of the summer, as crowds across New York City gathered to celebrate Independence Day. Coney Island is a popular holiday destination, drawing families and visitors to its beaches, boardwalk, amusement rides, and fireworks displays.
Residents in the area expressed frustration and fear, saying the neighborhood has seen repeated violence and disorder during large gatherings. For many families, what was supposed to be a night of celebration became a terrifying reminder of the risks of gun violence in crowded public spaces.

The NYPD investigation remains ongoing. Police have not yet released a motive, and officials are expected to continue reviewing witness statements, surveillance footage, and evidence recovered from the scene.
The incident adds to concerns about public safety during major holiday events, especially in crowded areas where families and children gather. As investigators search for answers, the victims and their families are now facing the aftermath of a violent attack that disrupted what should have been a peaceful Fourth of July celebration.
