Body Found in Costa Rica Identified as Missing California Woman Ashley Phillips: A Tragic Discovery

This tragic development highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding safety for hikers in Costa Rica, as the case of the body found in Costa Rica identified as missing California woman Ashley Phillips continues to draw attention.

According to local reports, Phillips was last seen on June 3 in San Salvador de Barú, a rural community in the Pérez Zeledón region of Costa Rica. She was officially reported missing to Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency, known as the OIJ, on June 7.

Her family later confirmed through a GoFundMe update that Ashley had been found and could now be brought home. The update brought an end to days of uncertainty and fear for her relatives, who had been asking the public for prayers and support during the search.

The body was found in the Barú area, near where search teams had been looking for Phillips. Costa Rican rescue workers reportedly located the body in or near a river area before turning it over to investigators for official identification.

Search efforts had been complicated by heavy rain, flooding, mudslides and unstable ground. Family members previously said Phillips disappeared after severe weather hit while she was hiking. Authorities have not publicly released a final cause of death.

Earlier reports suggested Phillips may have been caught in a sudden surge of water or flash flooding, but officials have not confirmed that as the official conclusion. Investigators are still handling the case through local procedures.

Phillips’ disappearance sparked a major search involving emergency crews, volunteers and local residents. The mountainous region where she vanished is known for rivers, waterfalls, steep trails and rapidly changing weather, especially during Costa Rica’s rainy season.

The search was also difficult for her family, who had traveled and coordinated from abroad while trying to find answers. Loved ones described Phillips as adventurous, joyful and deeply connected to nature and animals.

The family’s fundraising page said donations would help support search volunteers and later help with arrangements to honor Ashley’s life. Supporters also shared her story online in hopes of helping authorities gather information.

The U.S. State Department previously said it was aware of reports involving a missing American citizen in Costa Rica. Officials noted that when Americans go missing abroad, the department can assist families with local procedures, though privacy rules limit what can be publicly shared.

Phillips’ death is a tragic reminder of the risks that can come with hiking in remote areas during extreme weather. Heavy rainfall can quickly change river levels, trigger landslides and make rescue operations more dangerous.

For now, the family is focused on bringing Ashley home and honoring her memory after a search that ended in heartbreak.

Ashley Nicole Phillips was 30 years old.
