Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate nominee in Maine, has suspended his campaign following days of political turmoil over sexual assault allegations that he has strongly denied.
The controversy placed Democrats in a difficult position in one of the most closely watched Senate races of the 2026 midterm election cycle. Maine’s Senate seat is currently held by Republican Sen. Susan Collins, and Democrats had viewed the race as a key opportunity to gain ground in their effort to retake control of the Senate.
Before suspending his campaign, Platner reportedly held crisis discussions with campaign advisers as pressure mounted from Democratic leaders and party officials. The New York Post reported that senior Democrats were frustrated as Platner resisted calls to step aside while party officials faced a tight deadline to replace him on the ballot.
Reuters reported that Platner suspended his campaign on Wednesday after a series of controversies, including a sexual assault allegation first reported by Politico. According to Reuters, a woman accused Platner of forcing her to have sex nearly five years ago. CNN also reported that the woman alleged Platner entered her home without permission and raped her while intoxicated. Platner has denied the allegations.
The fallout was swift. Democratic leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, called for Platner to withdraw. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee also warned that it would not invest in the Maine Senate race if Platner remained on the ballot. Several prominent Democrats who had supported Platner withdrew their endorsements as the controversy intensified.
Platner, a former U.S. Marine and oyster farmer, had built his campaign around working-class populism, criticism of billionaires, and support for policies such as universal health care. His rise attracted national attention and energized progressive voters, but his campaign had already faced scrutiny before the latest allegations.
Previous controversies included offensive online posts, past relationship allegations, and criticism over a tattoo that resembled a Nazi symbol, which Platner later covered. He had apologized for some past behavior and said he had struggled with alcohol and mental health issues after military deployments.
In a video statement announcing the suspension of his campaign, Platner continued to deny the allegations and suggested that powerful political forces were working against him. However, he said the movement he represented could no longer continue with him as the candidate.
His departure now leaves Maine Democrats with a short window to choose a replacement nominee. Under Maine election rules cited by Reuters and The Guardian, party officials must move quickly to select a new candidate before the ballot deadline.
The situation has exposed deep divisions inside the Democratic Party between progressive activists who supported Platner’s campaign and establishment leaders focused on keeping the Maine Senate race competitive. Whoever replaces him will face the challenge of uniting Democrats while preparing for a high-stakes race against Sen. Susan Collins in November.
