Chicago was hit by a violent Juneteenth weekend as multiple shootings across the city left several people dead and dozens injured. This Chicago Juneteenth Weekend Violence Leaves Multiple Dead and Dozens Injured has shocked the community.

Understanding the Impact of Chicago Juneteenth Weekend Violence Leaves Multiple Dead and Dozens Injured

The deadliest stretch of violence included a mass shooting on the South Side, where police said gunmen opened fire from a red SUV into a crowd late Friday night.

Officers responded to the Princeton Park and Roseland area shortly after 11 p.m. after reports of gunfire near West 95th Street and South Princeton Avenue.

Police said a red SUV pulled up beside a large group of people before two shooters inside the vehicle began firing.

The SUV then fled the scene.

At least a dozen people were wounded in that attack, with victims ranging in age from 17 to 47.

Several people took themselves to nearby hospitals, while others were transported by emergency responders.

At least two victims were listed in critical condition, including a 17-year-old boy shot in the thigh and a 26-year-old man shot multiple times.

Police said detectives are still investigating the circumstances of the gathering and the motive for the shooting.

No arrests were immediately announced.

The mass shooting was part of a wider outbreak of gun violence across Chicago during the holiday weekend.

Local reports said at least 25 people had been shot and four killed by early Sunday, while other reports placed the weekend toll even higher, with six dead and 28 injured.

Because the weekend count continued to change, officials and local news outlets cautioned that the numbers may be updated as police confirm additional incidents.

The shootings happened during Juneteenth weekend, a holiday meant to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States.

The violence also came as Chicago was marking a major civic moment, with the Obama Presidential Center opening on the city’s South Side.

Local leaders and community advocates condemned the gun violence and called for accountability.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said the latest shootings were another reminder of the work still needed to reduce gun violence, remove illegal guns from the streets and prevent future attacks.

Community activists said the holiday should have been a time for celebration, not fear.

The mass shooting has renewed concerns about summer violence in Chicago, especially as large gatherings, holidays and warm-weather weekends often bring increased police patrols and community outreach efforts.

For families affected by the shootings, the holiday weekend became a tragedy.

Police are asking anyone with information about the South Side mass shooting or other weekend incidents to contact investigators.

The investigation remains ongoing.
