Colorado Democratic Socialist Candidate Faces Backlash Over 9/11 Foreign Policy Comments

Colorado Democratic socialist congressional candidate Melat Kiros is facing fresh political backlash after comments about the September 11 terrorist attacks and U.S. foreign policy resurfaced during the final stretch of a closely watched Democratic primary.

Kiros, a 29-year-old attorney and PhD student running in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, is challenging longtime Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette, who has represented the Denver-based seat since 1997. The race has become a test of whether the recent rise of democratic socialist and anti-establishment candidates can spread beyond New York and into other safely Democratic districts.

The controversy centers on a June interview with Colorado’s 9News, where anchor Kyle Clark questioned Kiros about previous remarks she made regarding the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Kiros had previously described the attack as an “inevitable consequence” of conditions she associated with occupation and Israeli policy toward Palestinians.

When pressed on whether she believed the September 11 attacks were also an “inevitable consequence” of American foreign policy, Kiros said that U.S. actions had destabilized much of the Middle East and created conditions in which some people believed violence was the only response.

Her comments quickly drew criticism from opponents, conservatives, pro-Israel groups, and some Democrats who said her framing appeared to excuse or rationalize terrorism. Critics argued that calling terrorist attacks “inevitable” risks shifting blame away from the perpetrators and onto the victims.

Kiros pushed back against the idea that she was saying Israel or the United States “had it coming.” She framed her answer as an attempt to discuss the conditions that lead to violence and war, rather than a defense of attacks on civilians.

Still, the comments have become a major issue in the Colorado race. DeGette’s allies have highlighted Kiros’ past remarks on Israel, Hamas, and antisemitism as evidence that she is too far left for Congress. Kiros’ supporters argue that the attacks against her are politically motivated and designed to distract from her economic platform.

Kiros is running as a democratic socialist and has been backed by left-wing groups including the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats. Her campaign website describes her priorities as Medicare for All, housing first, universal childcare, and an arms embargo on Israel.

She has also received support from major progressive figures, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ro Khanna. Her campaign has positioned her as part of a new generation of candidates challenging corporate influence, Democratic establishment politics, and U.S. foreign policy.

The race has attracted national attention because DeGette is not a conservative Democrat. She is a longtime member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has supported major liberal policies, including abortion rights and Medicare for All. That makes the challenge from Kiros especially notable: it is not simply a left-versus-right fight, but a battle over what kind of progressivism should define the Democratic Party.

For Kiros and her supporters, the central message is affordability. Her campaign argues that Denver residents are struggling with rent, healthcare costs, childcare, corporate power, and a political system that no longer listens to working people.

But the campaign has increasingly been pulled into debates over Israel, Gaza, antisemitism, terrorism, and foreign policy. Those issues have become major fault lines inside the Democratic Party, especially among younger progressive voters.

Kiros has called for an arms embargo on Israel and has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. She has also said U.S. support for Israel enables violence against Palestinians. Those positions are popular with some progressive activists but deeply controversial among pro-Israel Democrats and Jewish organizations.

The 9News interview also included questions about a 2025 firebombing attack in Boulder, Colorado, that targeted a group supporting Israeli hostages. When asked whether the attack was antisemitic, Kiros declined to say so directly, saying she did not know the perpetrator’s intentions. That response added to the criticism against her.

Her opponents say the pattern of comments shows poor judgment on issues involving terrorism and antisemitism. Supporters say she is being unfairly punished for criticizing Israeli policy and speaking about the roots of political violence.

The controversy reflects a larger national divide. Since the war in Gaza began, many Democrats have become more critical of Israel, especially younger voters and left-wing activists. At the same time, Democratic leaders worry that harsh rhetoric around Israel could alienate Jewish voters, moderate Democrats, and general election swing voters.

That tension is now playing out in Colorado. If Kiros defeats DeGette, it would be seen as a major victory for the democratic socialist movement and another warning sign for long-serving Democratic incumbents. If DeGette survives, it may show that establishment Democrats can still hold off challenges from the left when foreign policy controversies become central to a race.

Outside spending has also poured into the primary. Groups supporting DeGette have spent heavily to defend the incumbent, while progressive organizations have helped boost Kiros. That money has turned the race into one of the most closely watched Democratic primaries of 2026.

Kiros’ supporters say the backlash will not stop voters who want a new voice in Congress. They argue that voters are more focused on housing, healthcare, childcare, immigration enforcement, and corporate influence than on media-driven controversies.

Her critics argue that members of Congress must be able to speak clearly and responsibly about terrorism, antisemitism, and national security. They say voters should take her comments seriously because they reveal how she would approach foreign policy.

The result of the Colorado primary could shape future Democratic debates. A Kiros victory would strengthen the argument that democratic socialists are building real electoral power in major cities. A DeGette victory would give establishment Democrats evidence that progressive insurgents can still be stopped, especially when controversial statements become a defining issue.

For now, Kiros’ comments have made her campaign part of a much larger national conversation about the Democratic Party, Israel, U.S. foreign policy, political violence, and the limits of anti-establishment politics.

Whether voters view her remarks as unacceptable or as part of a broader critique of U.S. policy may determine the future of one of Colorado’s most important Democratic races.
