Venezuela Rocked by Powerful Earthquakes as Buildings Collapse in Caracas

Venezuela was struck by two powerful back-to-back earthquakes on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, causing buildings to collapse in the capital city of Caracas and sending terrified residents rushing into the streets.

The earthquakes hit near the country’s Caribbean coast, west of Caracas. Early earthquake monitoring reports placed the first major tremor at around magnitude 7.2, followed shortly afterward by an even stronger magnitude 7.5 quake. The shaking was felt across several regions and caused widespread panic in the capital.

Videos and images shared from Caracas showed dust clouds rising from damaged buildings, people running from swaying structures, and emergency crews moving into affected neighborhoods. Some residents reported cracked walls, broken glass, and debris falling into streets as the shaking continued.

Authorities said at least 32 people were killed and hundreds more were injured, although officials warned that the numbers could rise as rescue teams continue searching through rubble. Many people were feared trapped beneath collapsed structures, especially in areas where older buildings suffered heavy damage.

The disaster also caused major disruption to transportation and public services. Reports said Caracas’ main international airport suffered damage, with parts of the ceiling collapsing as travelers fled in fear. Public transport, schools, and some government services were disrupted while officials assessed the damage.

Emergency workers, firefighters, police, medical teams, and volunteers were deployed across affected areas. Rescue operations continued through the night as crews searched for survivors, cleared debris, and helped people who had been forced from their homes.

The Venezuelan government declared a state of emergency and urged residents to remain calm but cautious. Officials warned people not to return to damaged buildings because aftershocks could cause additional collapses.

A temporary tsunami warning was also issued for parts of the Caribbean after the earthquakes, including areas near Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The warning was later canceled, but authorities continued to monitor the situation closely.

The earthquakes struck during a national holiday, when many families were at home or gathered together. That timing added to the fear and confusion as people tried to contact relatives while power cuts, damaged infrastructure, and poor phone service made communication difficult in some areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey warned that the disaster could result in high casualties and major economic losses. Early assessments described the earthquakes as among the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century.

Venezuela lies in a seismically active region where the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates meet. Although the country has experienced strong earthquakes before, the scale and timing of these back-to-back tremors have made this one of the most serious natural disasters in its recent history.

International leaders and neighboring countries have offered sympathy and support as Venezuela begins rescue and recovery efforts. Officials said more information about casualties, damage, and emergency needs will be released as assessments continue.

For now, residents in Caracas and surrounding areas are being urged to stay outdoors if their buildings are damaged, prepare for possible aftershocks, check on vulnerable neighbors, and follow instructions from emergency authorities.

The full impact of the disaster is still unfolding, but the powerful earthquakes have already left Venezuela facing a major humanitarian and recovery challenge.
