Fireworks and Wildfire Risk: What Americans Should Know This July 4

As Americans prepare for Independence Day celebrations, fire officials across the country are warning that fireworks could create serious wildfire risks, especially in areas facing dry weather, drought, wind, and heavy vegetation.

The concern is especially strong across parts of the western United States, where wildfires have already been active ahead of the July 4 holiday. The Associated Press reported that several cities, counties, and states have placed restrictions on fireworks, while some communities have canceled public displays or encouraged safer alternatives such as drone shows. Utah has also moved to restrict personal fireworks because of extreme wildfire danger.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center, the United States had recorded more than 36,000 wildfires and over 3.1 million acres burned so far in 2026 as of July 2. The agency also reported dozens of large fires being managed nationwide, showing how stretched fire resources can become during peak summer conditions.

Fireworks may seem small when used in a driveway, backyard, or open field, but they can become an ignition source within seconds. A single spark can land in dry grass, brush, leaves, or debris and quickly grow into a fire, especially when wind is present. Experts say the Fourth of July often brings a spike in fire starts because many ignition sources are added to the landscape at the same time.

Officials are urging families to check local rules before buying or lighting fireworks. Restrictions can vary by state, county, city, or fire district. In some areas, personal fireworks may be banned completely. In others, only certain types may be allowed. Violating local fire restrictions can lead to fines, criminal penalties, and liability if a fire damages homes, land, or public property.

Safety risks are not limited to wildfires. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 15 fireworks-related deaths and an estimated 13,000 injuries in 2025. Sparklers alone were linked to about 1,300 emergency-room-treated injuries, and the agency warned that sparklers can burn at around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

For families who still plan to use legal fireworks, safety experts recommend keeping a bucket of water or garden hose nearby, lighting only one firework at a time, moving away quickly after lighting, and never trying to relight a firework that fails to ignite. Fireworks should never be used by children, and adults should avoid lighting them while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Another important step is proper disposal. Used fireworks can remain hot even after the visible flame is gone. Officials recommend soaking spent fireworks in water before throwing them away to reduce the chance of a trash fire or a delayed ignition.

The safest option, according to many fire officials, is to attend a professional fireworks display where fire crews and safety plans are usually in place. Some communities are also turning to drone light shows, which can provide a large public celebration without the same fire risk from burning debris.

This July 4, the main message from emergency officials is simple: celebrate responsibly, follow local rules, and avoid putting homes, firefighters, and communities at risk. In dry conditions, even one spark can be enough to start a dangerous wildfire.
