Suspected Drunk Driver Plows Through IRONMAN Jacksonville Race Course

A 62-year-old man named Darrell Simon was arrested after authorities said he allegedly drove through the IRONMAN Jacksonville race course in Florida while suspected of being intoxicated. The incident happened on May 16, 2026, near the Five Points area in Jacksonville, where athletes were competing in the cycling and running portions of the race.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle entered lanes that had been closed off for runners and cyclists, creating a dangerous situation for athletes and spectators. Police dashcam footage showed the car coming close to participants before officers moved in to stop the vehicle.

Officer Ernesto Valerio pursued the vehicle and eventually used a PIT maneuver to stop it near Riverside Park Place and Park Street. Another officer, Aaron Sanchez, also tried to block the vehicle with his motorcycle, but the driver allegedly drove around him and continued.

Police said Simon was arrested on eight felony charges, along with several misdemeanors and traffic violations. Authorities also said this was his third DUI arrest in the past 10 years. Thankfully, no athletes or spectators were injured during the incident.

The case gained attention after police released dramatic dashcam video showing the chase through the race area. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office praised the officers, saying their quick response helped prevent what could have become a tragedy.
