A New Jersey fire rescue boat sank in a rare and dramatic incident after a whale struck the vessel while it was returning from July 4th festivities in the New York Harbor area.
The boat, identified as Carteret Fire Department Marine Unit 2, had been part of a security assignment connected to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations near the Statue of Liberty. According to reports, the crew was heading back when a whale suddenly breached near the mouth of Raritan Bay and struck the stern of the vessel.
The impact caused catastrophic damage and rapid flooding, forcing the firefighters on board to abandon the boat within seconds. Officials said the crew members were wearing life jackets at the time, which helped them stay safe in the water.
Nearby civilians quickly stepped in to help. A jet ski operator and a recreational boater assisted the firefighters before additional support arrived from marine units, including responders from the Perth Amboy Fire Department. All crew members were rescued safely, and no injuries were reported.
Witnesses in the area reportedly saw a pod of whales before and after the incident. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the whale involved in the collision was injured. The unusual accident highlights how unpredictable marine conditions can be, even for trained emergency responders.
The Carteret Fire Department expressed relief that all personnel made it home safely. The incident also served as a reminder for boaters, jet ski riders, and kayakers to wear life jackets whenever they are on the water, regardless of the weather or conditions.
