American Airlines Flight Aborts Takeoff After Business Jet Enters Same Runway in Miami

An American Airlines flight was forced to abort takeoff at Miami International Airport after a business jet entered the same runway, creating a close-call incident that is now under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The incident involved American Airlines Flight 308, an Airbus A319 scheduled to fly from Miami to Bermuda. The aircraft had already received clearance for takeoff and was accelerating down the runway when the flight crew noticed another aircraft on the active runway.

According to reports, the American Airlines jet was traveling at about 60 mph when the pilots stopped the takeoff roll. The second aircraft was a NetJets Embraer Phenom 300 business jet that had crossed onto the runway.

The two aircraft reportedly came within about one-third of a mile of each other before the situation was brought under control. No collision occurred, and no injuries were reported.

Air traffic control audio captured the tense moment after the runway crossing. A controller told the business jet pilot that they had crossed an active runway. The pilot responded that they believed they had been instructed to cross. The controller then clarified that the instruction had been intended for another aircraft.

The FAA later said the private aircraft was not authorized to be on the runway and confirmed that it is investigating the incident.

American Airlines said Flight 308 stopped takeoff after the crew observed another aircraft on the runway. The plane later departed Miami and landed safely in Bermuda, though it was delayed after the aborted takeoff.

NetJets, the operator connected to the business jet, said the aircraft was under the operational control of a third-party maintenance vendor at the time of the incident, according to aviation reporting.

The close call is another reminder of how serious runway incursions can be. A runway incursion occurs when an aircraft, vehicle, or person is incorrectly present on a protected runway area. Even when no crash occurs, these events can be dangerous because aircraft may be moving at high speed during takeoff or landing.

Takeoff is one of the most critical phases of flight. Once an aircraft begins accelerating, pilots have limited time to decide whether to continue or stop. In this case, the American Airlines crew rejected the takeoff before reaching higher speeds, helping prevent a more serious outcome.

The Miami incident comes during a period of heightened attention on U.S. aviation safety. In recent weeks, other close-call events have been reported at major airports, including a near miss at Boston Logan International Airport involving Delta and American Airlines aircraft, and a drone sighting near Newark Liberty International Airport.

Aviation safety experts often point out that close calls do not automatically mean flying is unsafe. Modern aviation has multiple layers of protection, including pilots, air traffic controllers, radar systems, runway lights, onboard alerts, and strict procedures. However, each incident still matters because investigators use them to identify weaknesses before a disaster happens.

Miami International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States and a major hub for domestic, Caribbean, and international travel. Heavy traffic at busy airports means runway communication and coordination must be precise at all times.

Investigators will likely review air traffic control recordings, ground radar data, pilot communications, runway markings, taxi instructions, and the movement of both aircraft before the incursion. They may also examine whether confusion over call signs or instructions contributed to the event.

The key question is why the business jet crossed the active runway while the American Airlines aircraft had been cleared for takeoff. Until the FAA completes its review, officials have not made a final determination about responsibility.

For passengers, the incident ended safely. The American Airlines flight was delayed but later continued to Bermuda without further reported problems.

Still, the close call has sparked concern because runway safety is one of the most important parts of airport operations. A collision on or near a runway can have catastrophic consequences, especially when aircraft are accelerating, landing, or crossing active surfaces.

The FAA investigation will determine what happened and whether procedural changes, enforcement action, or additional safety steps are needed.

For now, the Miami runway incident stands as a serious aviation close call — one that ended safely because the American Airlines crew spotted the danger and stopped the aircraft in time.
