Louisiana Pastor Tony Spell’s Family Claimed Neighbor Tormented Them Before Viral Beatdown
A Louisiana pastor is facing a felony battery charge after a long-running neighborhood feud turned into a violent confrontation that was captured on video and quickly spread online.
Tony Spell, pastor of Life Tabernacle Church in Central, near Baton Rouge, was arrested and charged with second-degree battery after allegedly attacking a 20-year-old man who lives across the street from the church.

The incident happened on Hooper Road, near the church property. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Spell crossing the road toward the young man before the confrontation became physical. Another video appears to show the 20-year-old swinging first, but authorities say Spell continued striking him after the fight moved to the ground.
According to reports, the young man suffered injuries that required medical treatment, including stitches. Spell was arrested, booked into jail, and later released on bond.
The case has drawn national attention because Spell publicly defended his actions after his release. He claimed the young man had made violent threats against his wife, children, and grandchildren while Spell was working on a church bus.
Spell said he believed he had a duty to protect his family and congregation. Speaking after the arrest, he described the alleged threats as serious and said he would not allow anyone to threaten his loved ones.

However, the neighbor’s family has disputed Spell’s version of events. They have said the allegations are false and argued that the confrontation is connected to a long-running dispute between the two families.
New details reported after the arrest show that Spell’s family had previously complained to police about the neighbors. Spell’s wife, Shaye Spell, reportedly filed police complaints earlier this year claiming she had been harassed by the neighbor’s son. One complaint alleged that he followed her in a vehicle, shouted obscenities, made gestures, and nearly caused a crash.
Police reports also described earlier tensions between the families. Officers had reportedly warned the neighbor’s family not to follow or contact Shaye Spell, though no major enforcement action was taken in those earlier complaints.
The conflict between the Spell family and the Sherwin family appears to date back several years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Spell became a controversial figure for continuing to hold in-person church services despite public health restrictions. Around that time, he also filed a lawsuit involving local officials and neighbors, including claims related to surveillance cameras near the church.
The latest incident has reignited debate over the pastor’s public image, his past legal controversies, and whether law enforcement responded properly to earlier complaints from both sides.

Church members and supporters of Spell have argued that he was pushed too far by repeated harassment and threats. Critics, however, say the video appears to show excessive force and that any threats should have been handled by police rather than through violence.
The legal process is still ongoing. Spell has not been convicted of the charge and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. If convicted of second-degree battery, he could face serious penalties, including prison time.
The case is expected to continue drawing attention because it combines several sensitive issues: a well-known pastor, a viral video, allegations of threats, claims of harassment, and a long-running neighborhood feud.
For now, authorities and the courts will have to determine what happened before the fight, whether the alleged threats can be proven, and whether Spell’s actions meet the legal standard for second-degree battery.
Until then, the incident remains a highly disputed case with strong claims on both sides and a viral video at the center of public debate.
