18-Year-Old Gunman Kills Two in California Library Shooting, Child Injured
A tragic shooting at a public library in Northern California left two adults dead and a child injured, shocking the community of Chico and prompting a large-scale law enforcement response. Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old suspect in connection with the attack, referred to as the 18-Year-Old Gunman Kills Two in California Library Shooting.
Police said officers were dispatched to the Chico branch of the Butte County Library shortly after 5 p.m. Monday after receiving multiple emergency calls reporting gunshots and screams coming from inside the building. Officers arrived within minutes and entered the library as the suspect attempted to leave through a rear exit. He was taken into custody without incident.

Authorities identified the suspect as 18-year-old Bradley Scott Sayer of Chico. He has been booked into the Butte County Jail on suspicion of two counts of murder. Investigators said he appeared to have acted alone and there is currently no evidence that he knew the victims personally.
The 18-Year-Old Gunman Kills Two in California Library Shooting: A Community’s Response
The two victims who died were adults, though their identities were initially withheld pending notification of family members. A juvenile was transported to a local hospital with injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening.
During a press conference, Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge described the incident as deeply traumatic for the community. Officials praised the rapid response by officers, noting that the suspect was apprehended only minutes after the first 911 calls were received.
Investigators later revealed that the suspect allegedly expressed a desire to carry out a larger attack similar to the 1999 Columbine High School massacre. Authorities have not disclosed all the evidence supporting that conclusion, but they indicated that the alleged motive is a significant focus of the ongoing investigation.

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, are assisting with the investigation. Detectives are reviewing digital evidence, witness statements and other materials to determine whether the suspect planned additional acts of violence.
Following the shooting, officials temporarily closed roads around the library and established a family reunification center for patrons and staff who were inside the building at the time of the attack. All branches of the Butte County Library system were closed the following day as the community began mourning the victims.
California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed condolences to the victims and their families, thanking first responders for their swift actions in securing the scene and preventing further loss of life.
Community leaders have also voiced support for library staff, witnesses and families affected by the tragedy. Counselors and crisis support resources have been made available to those impacted by the shooting.

The incident has renewed concerns about gun violence in public spaces and the challenges of identifying warning signs before attacks occur. Investigators continue to examine the suspect’s background, communications and activities leading up to the shooting.
As the investigation continues, authorities are asking anyone with information about the case to contact law enforcement.
