USMNT Falls to Turkey on Stoppage-Time Goal but Advances as Group Winner
The United States men’s national team ended its 2026 World Cup group stage with a frustrating 3-2 defeat to Turkey after conceding a late stoppage-time goal in Los Angeles.
The loss spoiled what had been a strong start to the tournament for the USMNT, but it did not change the bigger picture. Mauricio Pochettino’s side had already secured first place in Group D before kickoff and will still move into the Round of 32 as group winners.

The match began perfectly for the United States. Auston Trusty scored in the third minute after finishing a corner from Sebastian Berhalter, giving the home crowd an early reason to celebrate. It was another fast start for a team that had already shown strong early energy in earlier group games.
Turkey responded quickly. Arda Güler played a major role in bringing his team back into the match, scoring the equalizer in the 10th minute before helping create the move that led to Turkey’s second goal. By halftime, the United States trailed 2-1 despite starting brightly.

Pochettino had heavily rotated his lineup for the final group match. Several regular starters were rested, while others were protected because of yellow card concerns before the knockout stage. The changes gave several players a chance to prove themselves on the World Cup stage.
Sebastian Berhalter was one of the brightest performers for the United States. After assisting the opening goal, he scored early in the second half with a powerful strike from outside the box to make it 2-2. His performance gave the USMNT a positive storyline on a night that ended in disappointment.
Christian Pulisic also returned from injury as a second-half substitute. His appearance gave the attack more energy and offered a boost before the knockout rounds, even though the United States could not find a winning goal.
The decisive moment came deep in stoppage time. Turkey created one final attack, and after the U.S. defense failed to clear the danger, Kaan Ayhan scored the winner to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.

For Turkey, the win was a proud ending to a difficult tournament. The team had already been eliminated before the match, but the late goal gave its players and fans a memorable final moment.
For the United States, the defeat will raise questions about defensive concentration, squad depth, and how the team handles late pressure. However, Pochettino tried to keep the result in perspective after the match. He pointed out that the United States achieved its main goal by winning Group D and reaching the knockout stage.
The USMNT finished the group stage with wins over Paraguay and Australia before the loss to Turkey. That was still enough to top the group and secure a favorable Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Santa Clara.

The defeat may also be useful as a warning. Knockout football leaves no room for small mistakes, and the late goal showed how quickly a match can turn when a team loses focus in the final minutes.
Still, there were positives. Berhalter impressed, Pulisic returned, and the United States protected some key players from suspension risk. The team now has time to reset before the next stage.
The Round of 32 will bring greater pressure. As a host nation, the United States carries high expectations, and fans will expect a stronger, sharper performance when the tournament becomes win-or-go-home.

The loss to Turkey ended the group stage on a sour note, but it did not end the USMNT’s momentum entirely. The Americans are still alive, still group winners, and still in control of their World Cup dream.
Now the challenge is clear: learn from the late collapse, recover quickly, and deliver when the knockout rounds begin.
