A missing giraffe named Gracie has been found safe after wandering miles away from her enclosure at a Texas ranch and surviving for nearly two weeks in rugged Hill Country terrain.
Gracie escaped from Cedar Hollow Ranch near Leakey, Texas, a remote area about 100 miles west of San Antonio. The young giraffe had been missing since mid-June, sparking a search involving ranch staff, local officials, residents, helicopters, drones, and game cameras.
Authorities confirmed that Gracie was found on Friday morning, June 26, on a neighboring property roughly four miles south of the ranch. Real County Sheriff Nathan Johnson said she appeared healthy and calm after being spotted during an aerial search.
The unusual search captured public attention because of the obvious question: how does a giraffe disappear? Despite her size, Gracie managed to stay hidden in dense brush and rough terrain that made searching difficult from the ground.
Her owner, Vick Jones, said Gracie likely wandered into a rocky part of the property that the ranch’s other giraffes usually avoided. After moving through the area, she apparently ended up on the wrong side of a gate and continued walking away from the enclosure.
Officials said Gracie survived by staying near water and feeding on vegetation in the area. When she was spotted, she appeared to be standing normally and swishing her tail, giving searchers hope that she had not suffered serious harm.
The next challenge is bringing her home safely. Because giraffes are large, powerful, and easily stressed, officials said a veterinarian and special transport team would be needed. Plans included sedating Gracie and moving her back to the ranch in a trailer designed for giraffes.
The search had become a viral story in Texas and beyond. Social media users shared jokes, memes, and fake sightings as residents waited for real updates. At one point, officials had to correct false reports claiming Gracie had already been found.
A $5,000 reward had also been offered for information leading to her safe return. Local authorities urged people not to approach her if spotted, warning that even though Gracie was not considered aggressive, chasing or startling her could make recovery more dangerous.
Gracie is a reticulated giraffe, a species known for its tall body, long neck, and distinctive patterned coat. Adult giraffes can stand more than 15 feet tall, but young giraffes can still move quietly through wooded areas, especially in rough and remote terrain.
The case also highlighted Texas’ unusual exotic animal culture. Private ranches across the state are home to many non-native animals, including antelope, zebras, wildebeests, and other species. Sheriff Johnson said escaped exotic animals are not unheard of in the area, but a missing giraffe was a first.
Now that Gracie has been located, ranch staff are expected to review fencing and gates to prevent a similar escape in the future. Her owner has said he plans to improve fencing in the area where she wandered out.
